Farmington Hills Master Plan

The City of Farmington Hills had not updated its master plan for more than a decade, and with the 50th anniversary of the city’s incorporation approaching, the time was right to assess the city’s history and chart a new path forward. The city engaged a wide variety of stakeholder groups with multiple surveys, focus groups, and in-person open houses with online counterparts. Public input was used to develop a set of building blocks to guide the planning process.

  • Housing
  • Quality Redevelopment
  • Sustainability & Resiliency
  • Transportation
  • Economic Development
  • Community Wellness
  • Places That Matter
  • Innovation
  • Diversity

A key to the plan’s vision for the future of Farmington Hills was close examination of the city’s most important non-residential corridors. Strategies were established for the development of more flexible zoning in these corridors, including a gradual transition from stand-alone large offices to mixed use in the 12 Mile Road corridor. The corridor plans were designed to directly address the need for housing, economic development, greater placemaking, and residents’ stated desire for more local entertainment, dining, and gathering spaces.
